News Rover - We provide News Rover to our clients for free, regardless of account size. Although it can be daunting to those just getting started, it is a very powerful program, and well worth the learning curve.

Thus, the main focus will be on that, but we would be glad to help with any news reader you choose. A selection of news readers can be found at the links to the left.

The Basics - News Rover is preferred by many clients, due to its search functions, automation capabilities, and ability to be customized. This is, however, what can make it intimidating when just getting started. Overall, though, it is one of the most powerful and customizable news readers out there, and we hope that you will find it well worth your time.

The makers of News Rover have some good tutorials in their support sections, with screenshots for clarity. A few of the sections covered are listed to the left.

We will cover installation and basic configuration here, as well as a basic description of the functions. You will find considerably more information in the sections to the left.

Installation & Configuration - Upon installation, you should be prompted for your username and password. If so, no other configuration will be necessary to start downloading. The version of News Rover above is customized for our server addresses, and will be ready to connect immediately after installation.

If you were not prompted for your username and password during installation, you can set them quickly as shown below, by opening News Rover and clicking on Configuration at the upper-left of the screen.

News Rover Configuration

The following screen will appear. Locate the Account Name and Password fields, and enter your username and password. For now, leave all other entries with their default settings.

Set News Rover Username

Click OK, and you should now be ready to connect.

News Rover Functions & Features - For those clients that prefer browsing by hand and having manual control over all the search functions in the world, a little configuration is needed.

Right-Click over the server name at the bottom left of the screen. Now select Subscribe/Unsubscribe Newsgroups, as shown below.

Subscribing to a newsgroup

The following screen will appear. Type part of the name of the newsgroup you would like to view/subscribe to, or the subject you are interested in to find newsgroups matching your interests. Below, we have typed in programming. Note that as you type, the list of matching newsgroups is updated.

Selecting a newsgroup

Double-click on the newsgroups you would like to subscribe to, or be able to read later. Alternatively, you can click once to highlight the group and then click the Subscribe button at the bottom of the screen. When done, click Finish.

The newsgroups you selected will now appear below the server name, as shown below. To start reading the group, download the headers for the group by click once over the group name, select to get all messages or only the number you select.

Once downloaded, the headers for the group will be displayed and you can begin browsing your newsgroups, just double-click on the subject lines you would like to view.

Newsgroup Headers

The text of the messages will appear in the bottom portion of the screen. Some groups contain millions of headers, or subject lines, so you may not always want to select All Headers when viewing a group.

Searching Newsgroups - Some of the most popular and powerful features of News Rover are its search functions. They are also the easiest features to use.

You can select to search message text only (Message Locator), MP3 files (MP3 Music Locator) only, or use the File Attachment Locator which searches for multimedia.

Searching Newsgroups

For this example, we will be using the text search (Message Locator) feature. Below Message Locator, click Message Search, and the following screen will appear. Type the words, subject, or phrase you would like to search for, and press Enter.

Newsgroup text search

Here, we are searching for 'BMW racing'. The search results are displayed on the main screen, as you can see by clicking on the image above to view the full screen. Search results can be viewed by double-clicking on the subject line.

Autoscan (Automatically downloading newsgroups) - Autoscan is one of those subtly powerful features that you may not want to get in to at first, but can makes things much faster and automated once you are familiar with it. Autoscan lets you select certain newsgroups, not to read but to automatically download from, based on certain criteria you set.

For example, you could set it to scan for certain phrases in the message bodies (or only subject lines) of the groups you select, and save the messages that match. Or automatically download all the .jpg files within the selected groups, or exclude certain file types or subject lines and only store the messages matching your criteria. A bit of an automated, highly detailed, search.

To setup up or explore this function, right-click over Autoscan Interest Group and then select Create New Interest Group, as shown below.

Scanning Newsgroups

This feature can be customized greatly to download much more selectively based on what you select, and to conduct automated searches over time.
